Code Book Questions

Which NEC edition does my state use?

NEC (NFPA 70) adoption varies by state and even by local jurisdiction. Most states are currently on the 2017, 2020, or 2023 edition. We recommend checking your state's electrical licensing board website or asking the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) on your job site. When in doubt, carry both the 2020 and 2023 editions — they cover the majority of active jurisdictions.

What's the difference between the NEC codebook and the NEC Handbook?

The NEC codebook (NFPA 70) contains the official code text only. The NEC Handbook includes the full code text plus expert commentary, explanations, diagrams, and real-world examples to help you understand and apply the code. The Handbook is ideal for inspectors, engineers, and anyone who needs deeper code interpretation.

Which ICC codes do I need for my state?

The International Code Council (ICC) publishes a full series of model codes including the IBC (International Building Code), IRC (International Residential Code), IPC (International Plumbing Code), IMC (International Mechanical Code), and IECC (International Energy Conservation Code). Each state adopts these independently, often with local amendments. Check with your state's building department for the current adopted edition.

What is NFPA 70E and who needs it?

NFPA 70E is the Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. It is required reading for anyone who works on or near energized electrical equipment. It covers arc flash risk assessment, PPE requirements, and OSHA-aligned safe work practices. If your crew works on live equipment, NFPA 70E compliance is legally required.
